I’m grateful for my move to Florida from Ohio at this stage in my career. I ve spent a lot of time in Florida in recent years, so It’s an opportunity to marry my professional life with my personal life. I’m thrilled about the opportunity to lead coverage for the opinion page. • As a child, she had no plans to be a crusading journalist. She wanted to be a crusading attorney to help the poor.
Pledger, 55, began her journalism career at the Las Vegas Review-Journal as a crime reporter. She worked at the Plain Dealer for 23 years before taking a buyout during a round of layoffs in 2019. She has spent the last two years as a freelance writer.
Newspapers continue to change drastically in a challenging media environment … so after a 30-year newspaper career I was ready for a change, she said. I’m thrilled about the opportunity to play an entirely different role in Jacksonville at a time when papers are rethinking editorial pages and seeking new ways to engage with the community, guest columnists, letters to the editor and younger audiences in order to increa ....

A story about a community, a good cause and the Times-Union

When former Jacksonville Jaguar Lonnie Marts Jr. hung up the phone last fall after talking with Times-Union reporter Beth Reese Cravey, he had no idea what would happen next: A story about a community, a good cause and a newspaper.
Cravey had reached out to the former linebacker to talk to him for a November story about his new Level the Playing Field Leadership Academy.
To explain what he was trying to accomplish with the academy, Marts told Cravey about his relationship with his mother.
Janet Marie Marts was a single parent raising Lonnie in a low-income New Orleans neighborhood. She and Lonnie’s grandparents worked hard to keep Marts out of trouble. ....
