DWI, assault charges filed following 2-vehicle accident

Formal charges have been filed following a two-vehicle accident in West Plains Feb. 25 that left two people in critical condition.
The West Plains Daily Quill reports 36-year-old Daniel French has been charged with two counts of second-degree assault and one count of driving while intoxicated, persistent offender, all felonies. A warrant has been issued for the West Plains man, with bail set at $50,000, according to court records.
The accident occurred at U.S. Highway 63 and Missouri Route CC/Gibson Avenue in West Plains.
The West Plains Police Department issued a statement Friday reporting at about 10 the previous night, a northbound van driven by French turned left onto CC Highway from U.S. 63 at a red light and collided with a southbound SUV. ....

The day was sunny, bright and blue when I hopped into my car and set out to find Mrs. Marty Uhlmann. Now nearly 90 years old, Mrs. Uhlmann is a generational Ozarker with deep roots in the region. She’s also the longtime newspaper correspondent for Dora, a tiny town in Ozark County, and where she grew up.

So far, she’s been writing about Dora for approximately 30 years. She represents one of a dwindling number of such chroniclers who write news items about their small communities for local papers.

In the past, these correspondents kept their neighbors connected with the larger area, sharing the comings and goings of locals, down to even who came for dinner, who was ill, and other need-to-know news. Largely, with time and technological advances, these individuals have disappeared. The hunger for this type of info still exists - now, however, it’s largely met on social media. ....

City of West Plains extends mask requirement ordinance

The ordinance, enacted in November 2020, was initially set to expire Tuesday.
The West Plains Daily Quill reports Mayor Jack Pahlmann says the reason for extending the order came down to Howell County’s high 14-day positivity test rate, which still hasn’t gotten below the 5% threshold needed for him to suspend the ordinance.
As of Wednesday, the county’s 14-day test positivity test rate is 26.1%, up 5.7% from a week ago. According to public health officials, a rate of 5% or below is ideal for slowing the spread of the coronavirus that causes COVID-19.
Pahlmann adds that another reason to extend the mandate through March is to match the state’s emergency order, also set to expire at that time. ....

"Look Twice" exhibit features works of Dennis Crider and Janey HaleOzark Radio News

West Plains Council on the Arts (WPCA) will host an exhibition of works by local artists Dennis Crider and Janey Hale, entitled “Look Twice.” The exhibit will be displayed at the Gallery at the Center, West Plains Civic Center from January 11 through February 14, 2021. The pieces will highlight the Ozarks – the photos of Dennis Crider, beside the matching artwork of Janey Hale. The Gallery, on the mezzanine, is open to the public during regular Civic Center hours.
“Being able to create paintings from Dennis Crider’s photographs has been inspiring. An artist can’t always paint on location. Dennis is very generous to allow the use of his photos for painting subjects,” says Hale. ....
