Westerly The Westerly Hospital Foundation has received $1 million in pledges from the Alfred M. Roberts Jr. Charitable Foundation and the Meredith and Whitney George Family Foundation.
“We are grateful for these landmark gifts from two very generous organizations that have long supported Westerly Hospital,” said Patrick Green, president and chief executive officer of the hospital. “These gifts will help augment the world-class clinical programs at Westerly Hospital and allow us to further upgrade our facility .  
The trustees of the Alfred M Roberts Jr. Charitable Foundation are pleased to support the Westerly Hospital in providing world class clinical expertise here in our community setting, said Stephen M. Ocean Chamber names its 2021 Citizen of the Year


WESTERLY — Michael “Spike” Lobdell, founder, president and CEO of New England Science & Sailing in Stonington, has joined a distinguished group of local residents.
Lobdell, widely applauded for creating one of the most successful community sailing programs in the country, is this year’s Citizen of the Year, an award bestowed by the Ocean Community Chamber of Commerce and considered by many to be the highest honor for business leaders in the two-state region.
Established in 1957, the award recognizes the “outstanding leadership” and the “exceptional contributions” made by award-winners to the greater Westerly-Stonington region. In selecting the person to honor each year, chamber members consider qualities like community leadership, integrity and creativity. A Toronto hospital was just ranked in the top 5 worldwide
Despite what some Americans will have you think, Canadian healthcare is some of the best there is.
Toronto General Hospital has once again found itself near the top of the list in a global ranking of the world s best hospitals. For the second year in a row, it placed fourth, beating out over 2,000 other hospitals from 25 countries.
The ranking was conducted by Newsweek in partnership with Statista Inc., which because of the global pandemic has said this is the most important list published yet.
Three other Toronto hospitals made it into the top 100 as well with Sunnybrook, Mount Sinai, and North York General placing 26th, 30th, and 59th respectively. ....

Peginterferon-lambda shows strong antiviral action to accelerate clearance of COVID-19

TORONTO (February 5, 2021) - A clinical study led by Dr. Jordan Feld, a liver specialist at Toronto Centre for Liver Disease, University Health Network (UHN), showed an experimental antiviral drug can significantly speed up recovery for COVID-19 outpatients - patients who do not need to be hospitalized.
This could become an important intervention to treat infected patients and help curb community spread, while COVID-19 vaccines are rolled out this year.
This treatment has large therapeutic potential, especially at this moment as we see aggressive variants of the virus spreading around the globe which are less sensitive to both vaccines and treatment with antibodies, says Dr. Feld, who is also Co-Director of the Schwartz Reisman Liver Research Centre and the R. Phelan Chair in Translational Liver Research at UHN. ....
