PALMER The Palmer woman charged with stabbing Marcia Wilson to death in Wilson’s kitchen on Feb. 8 was reportedly erratic in the days before the killing, had run up extensive debts purchasing military-style combat knives, and spoke of killing herself and her dog in some kind of ritualistic suicide.
Three times in the two days before the homicide, police were sent to check on Brenda Mayhew after her family grew concerned.
After one of those visits, Mayhew consented to be taken to Baystate Wing Hospital for a mental health evaluation, according to a police report. She was later released and stayed overnight at the 15 Fox St. home of Wilson and her husband. ....

State announces $12.9 million in funding for anti-gang, anti-domestic violence programs

SPRINGFIELD State officials on Monday announced nearly $13 million in grant funding to communities and agencies across Massachusetts to prevent domestic and gang violence.
Gov. Charlie Baker’s administration said the money would be awarded under two programs: the Sen. Charles E. Shannon Jr. Community Safety Initiative and the Violence Against Women Act, Services Training Officers Prosecutors.
Shannon grant funding, which pays for gang violence prevention, totaled $10 million, while funding for the domestic violence program totaled $2.9 million.
“Our Administration remains committed to using every public safety tool available to protect residents and communities from violence,” Baker said in a prepared statement. “For victims and survivors affected by these crimes, especially women and young people, these grants will help to equip victim-suppo ....
