Moorhead sets up overdue utility payment option, but shutoffs loom in April


Goal is to connect with 1,500 customers who owe about $1.7 million

MOORHEAD Moorhead s Public Service Commission gave final approval on Tuesday, Feb. 16, to a payment plan option for the 1,500 city residents who are overdue on their utility payments to the city and to the electric and water utility.
The plan gives residents who owe a combined total of about $1.75 million up to 24 months to pay off their bills interest free that in many instances were late because of job losses or reduced hours caused by the coronavirus pandemic.
However, the plan also calls for utility shutoffs to resume on April 20 if payment plans aren t made with Moorhead Public Service. ....

Ready Ride for seniors is back in Douglas County

A ride service for those 65-and-up has returned to a five-county area that includes Douglas County, and the program supervisor said customers are happy to hear it.
“They really loved the program and there’s a lot of excitement that it’s returning because there’s a lot of need,” said Brenda Larson, the Aging Well coordinator for West Central Minnesota Communities Action.
Called Ready Ride, the program depends on a state grant that expired in 2019, leaving elderly customers concerned about being able to get to their doctor’s appointments and run errands, she said. The ride service was not offered in 2020. ....

Without the super majority vote needed to pass the change to make the auditor-treasurer and recorder positions appointed instead of elected, commissioners passed the discussion and decision to the next commissioners who begin in January. The commissioners did not vote on the resolution since three commissioners indicated they would vote against adopting the resolution.
Commissioners reviewed a few of their positions from the public hearing on Dec. 7 as well as commissioners Chuck Horsager and Sheldon Monson noted numerous phone calls they received from constituents since the hearing. Commissioners-elect Michael Weyer and Murlyn Kreklau were the only members of the public to attend the publ ....
