Cllr Simon Jacobs unveiling Covid-19 memorial at West Wiltshire Crematorium MOURNERS are now able to pay their respects to victims of the Covid-19 pandemic at a new memorial at the West Wiltshire Crematorium near Semington. Cllr Simon Jacobs, the Wiltshire Council Cabinet Member for Communities, officially unveiled the memorial at a launch event on Wednesday, July 21. The Wiltshire site is run by Westerleigh Group, the UK’s largest independent owner and operator of crematoria and cemeteries, with 35 facilities across England, Scotland and Wales. Just over a year ago, Westerleigh Group announced plans to create permanent dedicated memorials within its landscaped Gardens of Remembrance at most of its sites for people to visit and commemorate loved ones who died during the pandemic. ....

FIREFIGHTERS and ambulance service personnel lined the route past Trowbridge fire station today for the funeral of former watch manager Guy Tadman - whom they affectionately knew as Tadders . Mr Tadman died on April 29 from acute myeloid leukaemia which was first diagnosed in November 2019. He received a stem cell transplant in April last year from his youngest son Josh but the cancer returned. Mr Tadman had served the Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service for 22 years before being forced to retire in January. Flags at fire stations and workplaces across Dorset and Wiltshire were flown at half-mast in his honour. An aerial platform appliance carried his coffin which was draped in the Union Flag. ....

INVENTOR, explosives engineer and a doctor of chemistry Dr Sidney Alford has died aged 86. Dr Alford was the Chairman of Alford Technologies Limited of Trowbridge, a world-leading provider of explosive engineering and explosive charge technology, that he founded in 1985. A prolific inventor of explosive charges for many different applications, he is considered the pioneer in water projecting disruptors driven by high explosive which are used in bomb disposal and his inventions have been credited in saving countless lives over the years. Dr Alford was born in the London suburb of Ilford on January 11 1935 and was one of two children. During the early stages of the Second World War he was evacuated with his family to Bournemouth on the south coast where hit and run German aircraft raids introduced him to machine gun fire and air-dropped bombs. ....
