SUPERVISOR SPOTLIGHT: Jay Rand talks about issues facing town | News, Sports, Jobs

Jay Rand
LAKE PLACID — As the town gets ready for the 2023 Winter World University Games, there are a number of issues facing the community, including short-term rentals, tourism, overuse of the High Peaks, the coronavirus pandemic and the state’s new law legalizing recreation marijuana use.
North Elba town Supervisor Jay Rand touched on some of those issues during an interview with Lake Placid News Editor Andy Flynn on Monday, April 12. Below is part of that interview.

LPN: What are some of the biggest issues facing Essex County right now?
Rand: I think a lot of it has been keeping up with the COVID issues this past year. Every day, (Board of Supervisors Chairman) Shaun Gillilland has been in communication with the state of New York and then passing the information on to us. We’ve really not been able to have a lot of face-to-face meetings. It’s all been Zoom. I think last week was the first one we’ve had for quite some time where we actually were in Elizabethtown all together. … A lot of it has been related to the health department and keeping up with clinics and getting transportation restarted.

LAKE PLACID — North Elba Town Council members are mixed on whether to opt out of allowing marijuana sales.
“My personal opinion on marijuana and drugs is I’d do anything to keep it out,” town Supervisor Jay Rand told the Lake Placid News on Monday.
Rand said he’s against the sale of marijuana in the town of North Elba right now; however, as the board discusses it in the future, he is not ruling out changing his mind. He said having marijuana for sale on Main Street, Lake Placid, would be “a tough pill” for him to swallow.

Local elections this Novemeber | News, Sports, Jobs - Adirondack Daily Enterprise

eizzo@adirondackdailyenterprise.com
It’s a local election year. Voters in many Essex County towns will elect town supervisors, clerks, councilors, highway superintendents and tax collectors this November. Two local towns, Jay and Keene, will have primaries in June, for both the Democratic and Republican parties.
Independent candidates can circulate petitions to get on the ballot starting today. Independent candidates have until May 25 to file those petitions, according to the county Board of Elections. Independent candidates are common in this area, so the list of people running for office is likely to grow.
The primary elections in Keene and Jay will be June 22.

Lake Placid mayor candidates debate | News, Sports, Jobs - Adirondack Daily Enterprise

eizzo@adirondackdailyenterprise.com
LAKE PLACID — Some of the issues Lake Placid’s two mayoral candidates spoke about Sunday, at a forum hosted by the Enterprise and Lake Placid News, have been problems for the village for decades — such as parking and affordable housing.
They also discussed regulation short-term vacation rentals, protecting Mirror Lake and bringing large-scale events back to Lake Placid this summer.
The candidates for mayor are current Trustee and Deputy Mayor Art Devlin on the Republican and Teamwork party lines and former mayor Jamie Rogers on the Common Sense party line. Devlin, who owns the Art Devlin’s Olympic Motor Inn, has been trustee since 2009 and is now term-limited and can’t run for a trustee seat again. Rogers currently works at Tri-Lakes Marine and was mayor for one four-year term from 2005 to 2009. Before that he served as a trustee for five years.
