The world recently got an inside view of what the United States’ onetime top diplomat south of the border thinks about U.S.-Mexico relations. And it has gone largely unnoticed.
Christopher Landau, the former American ambassador to Mexico, spoke candidly about his post to fellow diplomats on a call organized by the Council of American Ambassadors two weeks ago. A recording of the call was uploaded to YouTube and, as of Monday morning, amassed 2,000 views. ....

End of Project 100% in county marks new era in assisting needy

When she found out last month that the San Diego County Board of Supervisors had voted to end Project 100%, a program that for nearly a quarter century had supposedly been weeding out fraudulent applications for public benefits, Raynita Johnson had an instant reaction:
She wept.
Twenty years ago, as a single mother of four fleeing an abusive domestic relationship, Johnson was subjected to the main feature of Project 100%: an unannounced home search by a law enforcement investigator, looking for evidence of an attempt to defraud the county welfare, food stamp and other benefit programs.
Critics had long said the program was humiliating and invasive, and instead of catching fraud actually was aimed at deterring needy individuals and families from seeking benefits. ....

Opinion: Kudos to the county for providing needed legal help

Re “County to provide attorneys to immigrants facing deportation” (May 4): I applaud the Board of Supervisors’ decision to approve the pilot program providing attorneys to immigrants facing deportation, and Supervisor Terra Lawson-Remer for spearheading this change.
Two years ago I accompanied a mother and her two children, who did not have an attorney, to a hearing at immigration court. Hers was the last case heard so we sat through many other cases, some with attorneys and many not.
It was hard for me to see how any of the applicants without attorneys, most using English as their non-native language or working through an interpreter, would successfully navigate this complex system on their own. ....
