CONSIDERING THE LEGAL TENABILITY OF THE IMPLEMENTATION OF NEW
SIM REGISTRATION RULES
On November 7, 2011, the Federal Government of Nigeria passed
the Communications Commission ( Registration of Telephone
Subscribers ) Regulations
2 which required mobile phone
subscribers to allow their finger prints and a biometric map of
their faces to be collected and registered to their SIM cards,
which are then stored in a central government database.
Subsequently, on December 9, 2020, the Nigerian Communications
Commission ( NCC ) issued a directive for the suspension
of new SIM registration by network operators.

settled when on the 15
th of December 2020, the NCC
issued a fresh directive titled Implementation of New SIM ....

Telcos May Lose Licences over New SIM Card Registration Policy

Telecom operators, who fail to comply with the new SIM card registration policy may have their licences withdrawn, the Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC), has warned.
A statement issued by the Director, Public Affairs, NCC, Dr. Ikechukwu Adinde, said this was part of the decisions taken after an emergency stakeholders’ meeting.
The Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr. Isa Pantami, the statement said, has already set up a ministerial task force to monitor the implementation of the new registration policy of the federal government.
According to the NCC, from the decisions reached at the emergency stakeholders’ meetings, any telecoms operator in violation of the directive risks possible licence withdrawal. ....
