Increasing social risk is leading larger mining companies to divest coal-related assets, and social opposition to coal production leaves coal assets increasingly concentrated among companies that specialize in coal production, rather than diversified groups, a new report by Moody’s Investor Service has found.
Pure-play coal companies generally have weaker credit quality, with demand fading in some markets combined with a lack of product diversity, Moody’s points out.

All pure-play coal companies are rated below investment-grade today. In Moody’s analysis of dozens of global sectors, researchers have determined that the coal industry has very high social risk with thermal coal facing more significant risk than metallurgical (met) coal used in steelmaking. ....

April 4, 1980: Musician Red Sovine died in Nashville. Sovine, born Woodrow Wilson Sovine in Charleston, gained country music fame for his recitations, especially those incorporating sentimental truck driver themes.
April 5, 1856: Booker T. Washington was born a slave in Virginia. In 1865, he moved with his family to Malden to join his stepfather, who had escaped from slavery during the war.
April 5, 2010: An explosion at the Upper Big Branch Mine in Raleigh County killed 29 workers. Only two men escaped from the mine alive. It was the country’s worst coal mining disaster since November 20, 1968, when the Consol No. 9 Mine at Farmington, West Virginia, exploded, killing 78 workers. ....

On the evening of January 6, 2021, the day of the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol, former coal mining executive Don Blankenship, who ran against Donald Trump as a third-party candidate in the 2020 election, began an all-caps Twitter thread.

WV Remembers Upper Big Branch Mine Disaster On 11th Anniversary

Monday marks 11 years since the Upper Big Branch coal mine disaster in Raleigh County, where 29 miners were killed on April 5, 2010.
Federal mine safety investigators determined that a buildup of methane gas and coal dust led to the explosion at the Massey Energy-owned mine. It was the worst mine disaster in 40 years.
Massey CEO Don Blankenship was convicted in December 2015 of conspiracy to violate mine safety and health standards.
Massey was sold to Alpha Natural Resources in 2011. Alpha paid a $210 million settlement with the families of the workers and to address years of safety violations. ....
