Injured mountain rescuer Chris Lewis moves to spinal unit Chris Lewis Seriously injured mountain rescue volunteer Chris Lewis has been moved to a specialist spinal rehabilitation hospital as he continues his long recovery from life-changing injuries. The 60-year-old fell 150 metres while making his way to assist a camper on Red Screes above Kirkstone Pass on February 6. The Patterdale mountain rescue team volunteer has spent much of the time since in intensive care while a fundraising campaign on his behalf has now topped the £1million mark. Mr Lewis is still not well enough to receive visitors but team member Mike Blakey revealed his stricken colleague had been transferred from Preston Hospital to Southport Hospital, north west England’s regional specialist spinal rehabilitation centre. ....

Homicide investigators are still trying to find witnesses who may have information regarding the death of a homeless woman found along the American River Parkway Sunday. Right now, they have few leads, but those living along the parkway say violence is increasing. Every Monday the volunteers with Works of Mercy Homeless Outreach group hand out food and other supplies to the needy along the parkway. Volunteers are part of the Good Shepherds Catholic church in Elk Grove. Since the start of the pandemic, Betty May and Mike Blakey have seen the homeless population grow. ....
The community is being asked to continue supporting a mountain rescue volunteer who was seriously injured on a callout – his team are now asking the public to push the fundraiser to £1 million. Chris Lewis, a lifesaving volunteer from Patterdale Mountain Rescue, was seriously injured earlier this month when rescuing a tourist who had become ill when wild camping. He plunged 150 metres and sustained an injury to his spine that will see him in need of support for the rest of his life. A Just Giving fundraiser set up by the Lake District Search and Mountain Rescue Association has raised £815,233 at the time of The Cumberland News going to press. ....
