By Pat Sweeney Jul 20, 2021 | 5:53 PM The budget committee of the State Board of Higher Education has conditionally approved UND’s plan to tear down 35 buildings.
There are 29 apartment buildings ranging from six to 72 units. All were built between 1963 and 1982.
Also on the list: six residence halls (Bek, Hancock, McVey, Squires, Walsh and West) between 56 and 69 years old.
UND says removing the properties will save an estimated $61 million in capital renewal needs, plus operational expenses.
It’s tied in with UND’s planned $134 million project for new and remodeled student housing.
“Within the project, we said we would manage the low-density apartments for up to 10 years, so this won’t be an overnight demolition and restoration, but more las ongoing work throughout the next few years as we get to stabilization post-construction,” Pieper said. ....

2. Work and collect Social Security If you’re working and collecting Social Security while younger than full retirement age you’ll face something called the earnings test, says Mike Piper, author of Social Security Made Simple. “The earnings test results in your benefit being withheld and eventually recalculated – that is, adjusted upward - upon reaching full retirement age, says Piper. So, for example, if a person files 40 months prior to full retirement age, and the earnings test results in their benefit being fully or partially withheld for 22 months, then once they reach full retirement age, their benefit would be adjusted to what it would be if they had only filed 18 months early, rather than 40, says Piper. ....
“Working with that fraternity, they’ve made us aware that they’re close to securing the dollars to start that project,” Pieper said, “so we’re just asking for permission to start the process to sell the property.”
The committee unanimously okayed the request as long as UND is legally protected if Delta Upsilon should change its mind on the deal. ....
