U of M computer science assistant professor resigns as sexual misconduct allegations come to light

Walter Lasecki, a well-known University of Michigan computer science assistant professor, is resigning as of August 30 amid multiple allegations of sexual misconduct against him.
The Department of Computer Science and Engineering said Lasecki, in the meantime, will not be able to have in-person interactions with students.
The Michigan Daily, U of M’s independent student newspaper, initially detailed the allegations against Lasecki from four people dating back to 2016. Many of these incidents allegedly happened during industry social gatherings or conferences. One person described incidents allegedly happening on campus.
An internal investigation by the University that started November 2019 concluded that Lasecki did not violate its sexual harassment policy. ....

U of M professor placed on administrative leave after criminal sexual conduct charge

Computer science engineer professor Peter Chen, who has been with the University of Michigan for 27 years, was arraigned Wednesday on a criminal sexual conduct charge.

According to court documents, the victim was under 13 when the alleged abuse occurred in April 2017. The investigation is being handled by the Ann Arbor police.

He is represented by Smith Blythe, a firm specialized in sexual abuse allegations. His attorneys released the statement below:

On January 26, 2021 Mr. Chen was made aware of the criminal sexual conduct allegations that had been made against him. He completely denies the allegations and has cooperated fully with the Ann Arbor Police Department to assist them in their investigation. Mr. Chen is confident that the truth will prevail and that he will be fully exonerated. Mr. Chen thanks the numerous people who have reached out in support of him over the last few days.” ....

Lafayette man sentenced for child molestation
A Lafayette man who was convicted of molesting was sentenced Monday.

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) A Lafayette man who was convicted of molesting was sentenced Monday. Michael Wellman II was sentenced by Tippecanoe Superior Court to 30 years, with 20 years to be served in the Department of Corrections, and 10 years’ probation on his conviction of Child Molesting.
Wellman will be required to register as a sexual offender upon his release from prison as well.
Prosecutors accuse Wellman of having sex with the girl on July 20th at his home. According to court documents, Wellman had sex with the victim in July of 2019. ....
