Otter Tail County to charge some parents thousands of dollars for juvenile treatment


The measure takes effect July 1.

Parents of kids in juvenile detention or in treatment will be responsible for up to thousands of dollars a month under a policy passed June 22 by the Otter Tail County Commission.
The fees charged to parents for housing their minor children in juvenile detention would be the lowest, with the fees waived for those earning $17,500 or less, and the maximum monthly out-of-pocket cost at $75 per day for families earning $71,501 or higher, depending on family size. OTC contracts with the Clay County Juvenile Detention Center in Moorhead.
However, the fees shoot up for Otter Tail County minor children being removed from their home for treatment facilities such as the Lake Boys Home, Heartland Girls Ranch, Mille Lacs Academy, or Gerard Academy. Otter Tail County will charge parents up to 30% of their daily cost, which range from $200 to $300. ....

Starting Thursday, July 1, Otter Tail County will no longer be a state of emergency.
It s been more than 15 months since the county declared a state of emergency on March 17, 2020, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. It was one of the first Minnesota counties to do so.
The declaration allowed the county administrator to take steps to limit the spread of the disease, which has killed 84 county residents. Where possible, county employees began working from home, meetings were conducted virtually and the county required masks, hand sanitizing and social distancing. ....

Otter Tail County may be close to getting another $100,000 toward the County Road 41 bridge at Star Lake near Dent destroyed by arson last September.
County Attorney Michelle Eldien told county commissioners at their Tuesday, Feb. 9, meeting that a judge had agreed to secure $100,000 belonging to the defendant in the case, pending the results of a criminal trial. ....

Leslie Neugent is doing everything she can to make sure he son JJ is healthy, including fighting for him to have priority access to the COVID-19 vaccine.
JJ, a 23-year-old from Wayzata, has Down syndrome. The family has been under a hard lockdown since March in an effort to limit his exposure to the coronavirus.
We have not been in a grocery store or restaurant, Leslie said. It has been for all of us, absolutely terrifying.
As demand for the COVID-19 vaccine continues to grow, families across Minnesota worry that their loved ones with Down syndrome and other intellectual disabilities will be forced to wait for nearly two million other people to get the vaccine before they get the shot. ....
