The recent spate of apparently eastern European cyberattacks on important U.S. commercial interests from SolarWinds to Colonial Pipeline should force all of us to step back and review how we organize our world. Many crucial points of modern life are simply too vulnerable to being shut down at the whim of a political adversary.
Some of this problem arises from both the complexity of our system and the interconnectivity at its core. Which of these industries would hurt our nation if it was shut down for a month – banks, oil or gas, the power grid to homes and businesses, hospitals and healthcare, schools and colleges, cellular systems, food services, entertainment, and internet services? Microsoft Patch Tuesday: 4 Critical CVEs, 3 ...

This month brought patches for 55 CVEs in Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Office, .NET Core and Visual Studio, Internet Explorer, SharePoint Server, Hyper-V, Skype for Business and Microsoft Lync, Open Source Software, and Exchange Server. Fifty of these vulnerabilities are classified as Important in severity, one as Moderate.
One concerning CVE to prioritize is CVE-2021-31166, a critical remote code execution flaw in the HTTP protocol stack with a CVSS score of 9.8. An attack using this would be low in complexity and require no privileges or user interaction, Microsoft says in its disclosure.
To exploit this, an attacker would need to send a specially crafted packet to a vulnerable server using the HTTP protocol stack to process packets. This makes the bug wormable, a danger Microsoft points out. And as Dustin Childs of Trend Micro s ZDI writes in a blog post, Windows 10 can be configured as a server, meaning it s also affected. ....

More serious vulnerabilities in on-premise versions of Microsoft Exchange Server have been found. The discovery was announced yesterday as part of the monthly Microsoft Patch Tuesday security update releases. The patches need to be applied as soon as possible to Exchange versions 2013, 2016 and 2019. According to news reports some of the vulnerabilities were found by the U.S. National Security Agency. This comes after last month Microsoft reported that a Chinese-based threat actor and others are exploiting bugs to get into on-premise Exchange email accounts. The patches released yesterday also fix holes in Windows, the Edge browser, Office and other Microsoft products. At the same time Adobe released fixes for Photoshop, ....
