PORTLAND, Maine (AP) Maine s two U.S. senators said the coronavirus pandemic has provided evidence that the state s unemployment system needs to be modernized.
Republican Sen. Susan Collins and independent Sen. Angus King said Wednesday the federal government is giving the Maine Department of Labor more than $380,000 toward that effort. They said the money will promote and improve the labor department s short time compensation program, which is designed to allow workers to receive partial unemployment benefits if their employer reduces their hours to avoid layoffs.
The labor department is expected to use the money to raise awareness of the program and increase participation in it, the senators said. They said the money will also help streamline reporting by employers and workers to the Maine Bureau of Unemployment Compensation. ....

Maine Dept. of Labor awarded $382K grant to promote, enhance WorkShare Program


WASHINGTON, D.C.  The Maine Department of Labor has been awarded a total of $382,579 to promote and enhance its Short Time Compensation (STC) program, known as WorkShare, which allows workers to receive a partial unemployment benefit payment while their employer reduces their hours to avoid layoffs.
“This grant will help the Department provide outreach to employers about Maine’s WorkShare program and also provides funds to implement enhancements to the program that both employees and employers have requested,” Commissioner Laura Fortman said. “WorkShare can be used both to prevent layoffs and to recall workers who had been temporarily laid off from the business. This program has significant benefits for both employees and employers and is one tool to help support efforts to jump-start Maine’s economy.” ....
