Eduardo Gutierrez-Sosa, 29, was thrown from his mount Godfather Advice during race one (for quarter horses) at Crooked River Roundup. The two-year-old unseated Gutierrez-Sosa when the horse hit the rail, with the Central Oregonian reporting that the jockey hit his head on the running rail in his fall. The Crooked River Roundup races were abandoned after race two, after the news of Gutierrez-Sosa’s death was announced trackside.

The Central Oregonian news outlet reported that the fairgrounds grandstand was packed with enthusiastic fans cheering on the return of racing, which had been cancelled last year because of the pandemic. Most were at first unaware that a fatality had occurred. The second race proceeded after a delay of 51 minutes.
