National Weather Forecast: Freezing day for eastern states while WA warned of fire danger


A strong wind warning is also current for Western Port, Gippsland Lakes and West Coast.
The conditions come after a freezing cold day yesterday as snow fell across the peaks in both states.
Temperatures hovered around 20C at lunchtime in Sydney however it felt more like 12C.
At 12:30pm yesterday:
Canberra was 9.8C with an apparent temp (feels like) of 2.9C
Sydney was 19.5C with an apparent temp (feels like) of 12.9C
Thredo Top Station, elevation 1957m, was -2.8C with an apparent temp (feels like) of -17.8C
Ski resorts reported falls of 5 to 10 centimetres overnight with more falling constantly throughout today. ....

Cold front moving across southeastern Australia drops temperatures in Melbourne by almost 10C


A cold front bringing a polar blast of air has sent temperatures plummeting in parts of southeastern Australia, with residents also bracing for heavy showers, hail and snow.
The front moved in over Tasmania, Victoria and South Australia on Tuesday morning, with temperatures in Melbourne falling from a peak of 19C at 10:30am to 13C less than 90 minutes later.
The temperature in the city is expected to drop even further in the afternoon as cold, gusty winds associated with the front move in. 
The expected low of 9C in Melbourne will feel more like 4C thanks to the chilly winds, Bureau of Meteorology meteorologist Jonathon How said.   ....

As the Lucindale fire in South Australia s south-east took hold yesterday, Neil and Chris Watts raced home to find flames everywhere .
Today they were left to scour through the burnt remains of their home of more than 40 years.
Came straight here and that s when we found the place on fire, just about flames everywhere, couldn t do much about it, Mr Watts said.
