Property tax relief needed for Texas homeowners

As many of you may know, the Texas Legislature meets every two years and they met this year as scheduled. There were hundreds of bills that were introduced and some were enacted in to law, some failed, and some of them did not make it out of the gate.
Some had substance, some were âfeel good bills,â but nothing substantial in the area of property tax reform and the need to give property owners much needed relief.
I myself had interest in HB 288 that was introduced by District 85 representative Phil Stephenson. According to an
El Campo Leader-News article Representative Stephenson stated that this bill had the potential to reduce property taxes by 50 percent. ....

Early 2022 El Paso budget boosts police, firefighters, quality of life

The city of El Paso unveiled its preliminary budget for 2022 during a presentation to the City Council on Tuesday.
The city expects to increase its budget by 7% to more than $473 million for the upcoming year, an increase of more than $31 million, compared with the 2021 budget, according to city documents.
El Paso City Manager Tommy Gonzalez highlighted four areas of focus for the budget in the upcoming year: public safety, streets, quality of life and capital bond projects.
At more than $290.5 million, an almost 5% increase from last year, the city plans to fund priorities for public safety that include three police and two fire academies, while the police and fire departments, as well as emergency medical services, could receive up to $7.8 million for police vehicles, fire engines, ambulances and radio replacements. The Crisis Intervention Team and 911 Communications staffing also would see an increase in funding. ....

I am a product of EPISD. I graduated from Irvin HS and then attended the University of Texas at El Paso (then known as Texas Western), where I was the first Mexican-American to earn a scholarship for the tennis team. I earned a Bachelor’s Degree and later two Master’s Degrees, all in education. Prior to that, I served in the armed forces, and was stationed overseas in Vietnam. Afterwards, I was a public school teacher for almost forty years, most of them at Irvin High School. I’ve always believed that service to others is the key to a happy and fulfilling life and my wife and I raised our sons the same way. Even after my retirement I have continued to serve my community by running after-school programs and volunteering at my parish church. ....
