Gill Steward will join Cumbria CC as chief executive in August once the move is approved by full council. Ms Steward is the current chair of the Centre for Local Economic Strategies thinktank. She was chief executive for Bexley LBC from 2016 to 2018 and interim chief executive of West Sussex CC between 2014 and 2016.
Gillian Beasley, chief executive of Cambridgeshire CC and Peterborough City Council, is retiring. Ms Beasley has been at the helm of Peterborough for 19 years and, in addition, was six years ago appointed to run Cambridgeshire in a unique county council/unitary arrangement. In 2008 she was awarded an OBE for her work in local government. ....

Cumbria set to appoint new chief

Cumbria CC is set to appoint Gill Steward as its new chief executive.
If the move is approved at a full council meeting in June, she will take up the role in early August.
Ms Steward is the current chair of the Centre for Local Economic Strategies thinktank. She was chief executive for Bexley LBC from 2016 to 2018 and interim chief executive of West Sussex CC between 2014 and 2016.
She has a background in economic development, place and community services and was part of the executive team who oversaw the creation of Cornwall Council as a unitary authority.
Ms Steward said she looked forward to building on the county’s “very successful reputation and the fantastic work of Katherine”. ....

A meme was doing the rounds on Saturday morning that offered a theory of why Labour had done so badly in the local elections.
It read: “Labour: a bunch of rich people convincing poor people to vote for rich people by telling poor people that ‘other’ rich people are the reason they are poor.”
It may be true that any attacks Labour launched on expensive Tory tastes in interior design did not seem to put voters off. As one voter in Teesside told the FT last week: “Boris deserves nice curtains given what he’s been through with Covid.” ....

Birmingham reports increased local spend from biggest contracts

Birmingham City Council says the amount of money spent in its local economy through its biggest service contracts has increased during the pandemic.
A council report this week on social value includes data from 20 of the council’s largest contractors, indicating that £194.6m was spent in the local economy in 2020-21 – defined as within 30 miles of the point of service delivery – compared to £166.4m the previous year.
These contracts also saw the increase in other social value metrics. Weeks of local employment rose from 53,612 to 68,141 and hours of voluntary time increased from 9,883 to 10,825.
The report, from interim director of finance and governance Rebecca Hellard claims that “other than work placements, Covid has not had a negative impact on delivery of social value”. ....
