Russia unveils new Checkmate fighter jet
Russian President Vladimir Putin has received a sneak peek of a new fifth-generation lightweight single-engine fighter jet at an air show just outside of Moscow.
Russian aircraft makers unveiled a prototype of the stealth fighter dubbed Checkmate for the 68-year-old leader at the MAKS-2021 International Aviation and Space Salon in Zhukovsky, ahead of its official unveiling later on Tuesday (local time), according to a statement from Rostec, the state-owned military giant which is responsible for exporting Russian technology.
The head of Rostec, Sergey Chemezov, and the general director of United Aircraft Corporation (UAC), Yury Slyusar, presented the warplane to Mr Putin at the exhibition pavilion of the Sukhoi company. ....

The Taleban’s lightning-fast advance to control more territory in Afghanistan is raising alarms from Russia to China, as US President Joe Biden’s move to withdraw troops disrupts a balance of power in South Asia that has held steady for about two decades.
At least 1,000 Afghan troops this week retreated into Tajikistan, prompting the country mobilise an extra 20,000 soldiers to guard its frontier. Russian President Vladimir Putin’s sought out assurances from the Taleban that it will respect the borders of Central Asian states that once were part of the Soviet Union, while neighbouring Pakistan has said it won’t open its borders to refugees. ....
