Grossmont Healthcare District names new CEO

Christian T. Wallis, who has more than 25 years of experience in the health care field, was named the new CEO of the Grossmont Healthcare District on Monday.
The district’s five-member Board of Directors unanimously approved a two-year contract for Wallis.
Wallis, who lives in the village of Grayslake, Ill., 40 miles north of Chicago, will start May 17 with a salary of $215,000, according to the district.
He takes over for Barry Jantz, who was the public health care district’s leader since 2004. Jantz retired in March of this year, but stayed on as a contracted worker until a replacement was found. ....

East County health care group tallies its totals in grants over past year

More than 30 groups received $1.3 million in grants, sponsorships or charitable help from the Grossmont Healthcare District during the fiscal year 2020-21.
The district, based in La Mesa, reported its highest grantees were San Diego Freedom Ranch, a drug and alcohol rehabilitation center in Campo, which received $250,000; and the Grossmont Union High School District, which received more than $200,000 for its “Health Career Pathway Initiative” program.
The school district program focuses on addressing the shortage of health care workers by providing experience in the field to more than 2,000 high school students.
The nonprofit Volunteers in Medicine was another top grant awardee, receiving $118,277 for its free clinic that serves more than 50,000 uninsured county residents. ....

Carlsbad's new city manager takes the long view

As a political science student in college, Scott Chadwick wanted to be an elected official. Instead, he ended up working for five of them.
Chadwick, 46, became Carlsbad’s new city manager Aug. 1, where as the city’s top administrator his direct supervisors are the members of the City Council.
“I take my cues from the council as a whole,” he said. His job is to implement the council’s policies and stay as far out of politics as possible.
Most of Chadwick’s career has been with the city of San Diego, where he was chief operating officer from 2013 to 1018. His efforts there were praised by the California League of Cities and others for improving service, increasing transparency and boosting community engagement ....
