New funding to revitalise research impacted by Covid

$1.4M from Federal Research Support Program supports emerging researchers and interdisciplinary teams
The University of Wollongong has announced more than 50 individual and team grants as part of its RevITAlise (RITA) Research Grants scheme.
As part of the Federal Government’s 2021 Research Support Program (RSP), more than $1.4M has been distributed via the grant scheme prioritising early career researchers and interdisciplinary teams impacted by COVID-19.
UOW Deputy Vice-Chancellor Research and Innovation Professor Jennifer Martin said the grants direct funds to researchers most impacted by the challenges of the pandemic.
“Given the disruptive nature of COVID-19 to research pursuits I am delighted that this support is provided to our emerging researchers and interdisciplinary teams,” Professor Martin said. ....

Australia COVID: How do we know the AstraZeneca, Pfizer vaccines won't have long-term safety risks?

Whenever I talk to people about vaccines, the same questions come up over and over again: have we tested them for long enough?
And how do we
really know they are going to be safe, long term?
It seems like a compelling point. The first vaccine trials started about 16 months ago. Sure, we can be confident in their short-term safety … but how do we know in a decade or two we’re not going to start turning into horrifying lizard creatures?
The answers are surprising. Vaccine trials are shorter than you might think – but time and time again, they produce safe and effective vaccines. And we probably have better data about COVID-19 vaccines at this point than almost any other vaccine we have developed. ....

Australia COVID: Scott Morrison told of need for locally-made Pfizer-style vaccines

Medical researchers and scientists have been lobbying the Morrison government for almost a year about the need to develop an mRNA vaccine manufacturing capacity in Australia, but action was delayed until a few months ago.
Some researchers began advocating last August for work on “messenger RNA” technology, which is behind the success of the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines and whose usefulness became clear as the global pandemic intensified last year.
Australian scientists and industry groups want to develop onshore capacity to make vaccines like the Pfizer mRNA shot.

However, it was not until May this year that the government issued a so-called “approach to market”, inviting interested parties to provide a fully-costed proposal to manufacture the vaccines in Australia within one to three years. A dozen proposals to make the vaccines locally are now being considered. ....
