Rhoda Ackerson Weyr, a long-time Boothbay resident and community activist, died on Sunday, April 25, 2021 in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. She was 83 and had developed complications after a fall.
She was born Rhoda Anne Ackerson in 1937 in Budapest, Hungary, where her father was a U.S. diplomat. Weyr’s roots in Maine extended back to her maternal grandfather, who bought a large part of Monhegan Island where he was stationed during the Spanish American War. Weyr inherited the land and donated most of it to the Monhegan Land Trust where there is now a plaque on Blackhead commemorating her aunt. ....

Fishermen at odds with Mills administration over offshore wind

“Right now this is a science project. Proposing to turn the Gulf of Maine marine life, marine mammals, and sea bottom into a test tube for the benefit of foreign corporations,” he told legislators on the Energy, Utilities and Technology Committee.
Supporters of offshore wind, however, say those projects are essential to Maine’s future.
“The biggest threat to our environment, including the marine environment, is climate change,” said Beth Ahearn of Maine Conservation Voters. “We have to act to minimize the effect of climate change. So we all need to work together to develop climate solutions to get us off fossil fuel.” ....

Maine fishing interests seek total ban on offshore wind energy

More than 60 commercial fishermen and their supporters testified Tuesday in favor of a bill that would block any attempt to develop offshore wind projects anywhere along the Maine coast.
The bill would prohibit any state agency from permitting or approving any offshore wind energy project regardless of its location. It was introduced by Rep. Billy Bob Faulkingham, R-Winter Harbor, a commercial fisherman, and co-sponsored by eight other Republican lawmakers.
The testimony on L.D. 101 from lobstermen, their families and town officials from fishing communities drew a clear line in the sand: Any offshore wind development, they told told lawmakers on the Energy, Utilities and Technology Committee, would threaten the very survival of their iconic industry and way of life. ....
