Family of Tommie McGlothen files federal wrongful death lawsuit


SHREVEPORT, La. – The family of a man who last spring in police custody has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the city, the police chief and officers.
James Carter, of The Cochran Firm in Metairie, who filed the lawsuit Tuesday in federal court, is asking for unspecified damages on behalf of the family of Tommie McGlothen Jr. In October, Carter sent a demand letter to the city saying he would not sue if the city agreed to pay a $25 million settlement. The city took no action.
Names as defendants in the lawsuit are the city of Shreveport, its insurance company, Police Chief Ben Raymond and four Shreveport police officers. ....

Police custody death: McGlothen family sues Shreveport police chief, 4 others


The family of Tommie McGlothen, Jr., along with family attorney James Carter of The Cochran Firm, filed a lawsuit Tuesday against Shreveport Chief of Police Ben Raymond and four of the officers involved in McGlothen s death.  
The lawsuit comes after a $25 million settlement demand by the family back in October, naming the City of Shreveport, Raymond, and the four SPD officers who were indicted in the case   Treona McCarter, Brian Ross, D Marea Johnson, and James LeClare.
Carter told The Times on Tuesday there was no formal response to the settlement demand which is why they moved forward with the lawsuit as promised. ....

Michael R. La'Fitte II to head Shreveport NAACP Chapter as president.


The second-round election for officers of the Shreveport NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) Chapter resulted in a new president.
Michael R. La Fitte II is the new winner with 80 votes in this second-round election. Rev. Calvin Austin, the winner in the first election, had 66 votes and Rev. Linus Mayes, had 74 votes.
“I’m happy with the results,” La’Fitte told The Times Tuesday morning. “I’ve had conversations with the other two presidential candidates who are willing to lend their support to help move the organization as a whole.”
