Leading businessman George S. Schmidt liked the way York was heading in the Gay Nineties, five years after it had become a city.
But he felt some folks had held too firmly to the past for decades and, in fact, were still doing so.
Let well enough alone was a motto which we devotedly followed for a hundred years and which might well have been engraven on our borough seal, he wrote in the daily York Gazette in February 1892.
He didn t stop there.
We lived a life as placid and contented as it was narrow and bigoted, he wrote, and blindly sacrificed on the altar of a mistaken conservatism every tendency toward municipal advancement. Coroner: Previously missing New Freedom woman s death ruled a suicide

A New Freedom woman who went missing about nine days ago and whose body was found on Friday died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to York County s coroner.
An autopsy on Monday morning at Allentown s Lehigh Valley Hospital determined 29-year-old Nicole Elizabeth Ebaugh died of a gunshot wound to the head, according to Coroner Pam Gay.
After what was described as a thorough investigation, Gay ruled the manner of Ebaugh s death to be suicide, according to a news release issued by Gay s office on Monday afternoon.
Trooper Kevin Kotchka, a state police spokesperson, has said Ebaugh s body was found Friday in the area where the search for her had been concentrated. ....

Search for missing woman last seen near Heritage Rail Trail continues

An extensive search with helicopters, dogs and horses continued Monday after a woman was reported missing Saturday near the York County Heritage Rail Trail.
Nicole Elizabeth Ebaugh, 29, was last seen near the trail parking area on Glatfelters Station Road in North Codorus Township between 10:45 a.m. and 12:45 p.m. Saturday, Pennsylvania State Police said in a news release.
(Ebaugh s) disappearance does not appear to be suspicious or criminal in nature at this time, Kevin Kochka, a state police spokesperson, said via email.
An extensive nighttime search was conducted on Saturday night with negative results, he said. The search continued Sunday morning and lasted throughout the day. ....
