In New York City you can hear the beginnings of a post-pandemic world as much as you can see them.
At Manhattan’s Javits Center, one of the busiest convention centers in the country in pre-pandemic times, roughly 9,000 New Yorkers shuffle through every day to receive their Covid-19 vaccines.
Thanks to Sing for Hope, the non-profit arts advocacy group known for their colorful public pianos spread across the city, you can also be serenaded while receiving your vaccine.
Through its daily performances inside the Javits Center, the organization helps tackle the dual problem of “rampant artist unemployment” and anxiety surrounding getting a Covid-19 vaccine, Monica Yunus, co-founder of Sing for Hope, told CNN. ....

Bronx, NY—The New York Botanical Garden (NYBG) announces the opening of its expansive 2021 exhibition, KUSAMA: Cosmic Nature, featuring work by internationally celebrated Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama. Postponed in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the exhibition includes four experiences debuting at the Botanical Garden. NYBG is the exclusive venue for KUSAMA: Cosmic Nature. On view April 10 through October 31, 2021, the exhibition is installed across the Garden’s landscape, in and around the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory, and in the LuEsther T. Mertz Library Building. Damali Abrams the Glitter Priestess is a New York City-based artist, reiki practitioner, and educator. Her work largely references the Afro-Caribbean folklore and aesthetics that she was immersed in growing up in Queens, New York. Abrams’ parents are from Guyana. Culturally and politically a Caribbean nation, Guyana is the only English-speaking nation in South America. Growing up Abrams heard many stories about mermaid sightings in Guyana, as well as other supernatural phenomena that are considered mundane in the Guyanese diaspora as well as other Afro-Caribbean cultures. This contributed to a lifelong fascination with mythical creatures and magical experiences. Inspired by second-wave Black Feminism, her research-based work is about visualizing Black utopias via mixed media collage, performance, video, and installation, referencing folklore, fantasy, and magical realism from Black Atlantic cultures.
