PUBLIC relations firm boss Philip Allott has pledged to be “a broad church” and tackle a wide range of concerns after being elected Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner for North Yorkshire.
With a turnout that was the highest since the post of police and crime commissioner was created in 2012, the Conservative candidate took 47 per cent of the first preference votes – falling short of the requisite 50 per cent – but secured re-election on second preference votes.
After several recounts it was announced he had secured a total of 83,737 first and second preference votes, over 30,000 more than his nearest rival Labour’s Alison Hume. ....

THE number of inmates at Askham Grange prison has dropped compared to levels at the start of the pandemic, figures reveal.
With court delays owing to the pandemic being blamed for changes in the normal flow of inmates, the Howard League for Penal Reform said court backlogs had put additional strain on defendants and victims alike.
Ministry of Justice (MoJ) data shows that there were 103 inmates at Askham Grange prison, a women s open prison, in Askham Richard, North Yorkshire, as of March 31 – 10 fewer than at the same point in 2020. This is in line with the situation across England and Wales, where the number of prisoners fell by six per cent at the end of March. ....

St Sampson's over-60s' club is set to reopen in York

ST SAMPSON’S Over-60s’ Centre will reopen its doors to the public on Monday.
The Covid-19 lock downs have taken their toll on many social gatherings throughout the region, but the York City Centre-based church can’t wait to get back to some sort of normality.
Reverend Sue Nightingale, chairman of the trustees and the church’s chaplain, said: “All our volunteers and staff are really looking forward to getting back and meeting the people again, despite the restrictions.
“We are also looking forward to meeting some new people and we’re looking for some new volunteers who can lend a hand. We serve food and drinks and I think it’s the best value catering in York, but that’s just my personal opinion.” ....
