Job Growth Underwhelms; U.S. Gains Only 266,000 Jobs in April


Government and Leisure & Hospitality industries post greatest job gains in April.
Maintaining March s robust pace of job gain was going to be challenging at some point, but it was expected to be a few months away. We are seeing an earlier, more significant slowdown, said Jay Denton, chief analyst for ThinkWhy.
One year ago, the U.S. lost 20.7 million jobs in April 2020 alone, equivalent to 13.8% of total employment at that time. Combined with significant job loss in March 2020, the U.S. suddenly found itself with 22.4 million fewer jobs in the blink of an eye. 
Fast forward a year, and the market had been on an upswing after 770,000 jobs were added in March, and unemployment insurance claims dropped during the month of April. Still, consumer confidence and GDP outlook continue to improve. SANTA CLARA, Calif., April 29, 2021 /PRNewswire/ The number of new sellers surged in April compared to last year when most cities had shelter-in-place orders in effect. However, with the number of new listings still nearly 26% below pre-pandemic levels, buyers saw little relief as the median U.S. home listing price soared 17.2% year-over-year to a new high of $375,000 and homes sold lightning fast in a record low 43 days, according to the realtor.com

Total nonfarm employment for the Miami-Fort Lauderdale-West Palm Beach, FL Metropolitan Statistical Area stood at 2,571,300 in March 2021, down 160,100 or 5.9 percent, over the year, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. During the same period, the national job count declined 4.4 percent. (See chart 1and table 1.) Regional Commissioner Janet S. Rankin noted that this was the 12
