Green light for local bowlers

And three York clubs are opening up their greens to encourage people to try the sport.
York RI Bowls Club bowls manager Mick O’Donnell said: “We are looking forward to being part of the national recruitment drive to try to encourage people, who haven’t tried bowls, to give it a go.
“We are holding some events over the weekend of Friday, May 28, to Monday, May 31, and the chief executive of Bowls England Jon Cockroft is coming to Yorkshire to visit some of the events taking place.
“The idea is that people are directed to the Big Bowls Weekend website and they can register to take part in one of the events.” ....

Memories shared of VE Day

The anniversary of VE Day was remembered at Rivermead care home in Norton.
Staff dressed in wartime fashion, while residents, wearing their Union Jack hats, shared memories of May 1945.Audrey reminisced about the years of blackouts and patrolling Home Guards barking, ‘Put that light out!’. Another resident told of the wonder when, at the end of the war, everything was suddenly lit up. ‘Streetlights were on again, and my father drove us to Bishopthorpe Palace in York with his headlights on full all the way.
A spokesperson for Rivermead said: After lunch, tea and cake were served, and Vera Lynn’s emotive songs played in the background. All in all it was a wonderful way to celebrate the joyful emotions at World War Two s end, a time still vivid for some. ....

What visitors can expect when York attractions reopen

ATTRACTION operators in York are counting down the days until they can once again welcome back visitors.
Jorvik Group which runs Jorvik Viking Centre, Barley Hall and DIG, enabling people to explore York s colourful past, have made changes to their experiences ahead of reopening.
Measures to support social distancing at Jorvik last summer proved popular, prompting more permanent changes to how visitors move through the venue.
Beth Dawes, marketing manager for the Jorvik Group, said: “This last lockdown has been incredibly hard for everyone in the visitor attraction economy, but we are hopeful that public confidence in venturing back out into towns and cities will bode well for attractions like ours, as well as the hotels, restaurants and cafés that makes a day trip or a short break so enjoyable. ....

Yorkshire churches receive a funding pot of £50,000 funding for vital repairs to help secure their futures

The trust’s chairman, Tom Ramsden, said: “Thanks to the generosity of Friends and donors, we have been able to support a wide range of places of worship.”
With many buildings facing financial strains through the need for repairs to roofs, windows and brickwork, the funding supports small schemes such as gutter repairs to large scale re-pointing of stonework, roof repairs and other conservation works.
Grants were awarded to a range of places of worship including a Methodist church in Mosborough, a Grade II listed church in Sigglesthorne in the East Riding, a rural Congregational church in Swaledale and Leeds Minster. ....

John Michael Bland hit his wife’s head with a hammer
A HUSBAND who twice hit his wife on the head with a heavy hammer has been jailed.
John Michael Bland, 60, told police he needed to be punished because he was having an affair with another woman, said Andrew Finlay, prosecuting.
His wife still loves him and didn’t want to press charges as she didn’t want him to get into trouble, Mr Finlay told York Crown Court.
“I love her, I could have killed her,” Bland told his barrister Laura Addy later.
Mr Finlay said on January 20, Bland told his wife to close her eyes as he had a surprise. ....
