View Comments The number of white Christians in the U.S. has been on the decline for decades, but a new report says the drop has slowed. The 2020 Census of American Religion from PRRI shows the size of the group has grown slightly. In 1996, 65% of Americans identified as white and Christian, but that dropped in 2018 to 42%. In 2019 and 2020, it stood at 44%. That tick upward indicates the decline is slowing from its pace of losing roughly 11% per decade, the report released July 8 states.
