Will we ever see an independent Kurdistan?

Last week at Yale Jackson Institute, we held a conference with Justice for Kurds, an advocacy group that seeks to raise awareness for the Kurdish cause. My panel focused on whether there should be a new US Strategy for Syria, Iraq and the Kurds. In other words, should the US help facilitate a Kurdish state?
I started working in Kurdistan before the US toppled Saddam Hussein in 2003. Like most journalists and aid workers I know who’ve have spent time there, I’ve always believed that the Kurds, like all stateless people, deserve the right to self-determination.
The Kurds should have been granted their country after the First World War ....

Nuno P. Monteiro, associate professor of political science, died on May 5.
Monteiro was an expert in international relations theory and security studies. He was known among his colleagues and students for his intellectual rigor, compassionate nature, and friendly spirit. 
“Nuno was a gifted and devoted teacher and mentor to undergraduate and graduate students alike,” said Gregory Huber, chair of the Department of Political Science. “Additionally, he was a serious and forceful academic who took deep pride in the art and craft of research, reading, and engaging widely. His work and insights deepened our knowledge of complex problems within international relations, including nuclear proliferation, in the complex post-Cold War world. We will all miss his insights, rigor, and deep sense of humor.” ....

A series of three teach-ins involving Law School faculty, staff, alumni, and affiliates examined the trial of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, who was convicted in the murder of George Floyd. The series presented an opportunity for the Yale community to reflect and come together in the wake of the verdict.
The teach-ins were held as webinars on April 22 & 23, 2021 for the Yale community and explored the wide-ranging legal and societal implications of the killing of Floyd, the subsequent legal proceedings, and the recent guilty verdicts. ....

Prior to that, Stewart served in a variety of roles including as Minister of the Environment, as Minister of State responsible for development policy in the Middle East and Asia and UK policy in Africa, as Minister of State for Justice, and as Chair of the House of Commons Defense Select Committee. Earlier in his career he served briefly as an infantry officer and then as a diplomat ....
