Michigan City mayor doesn't gloss over city's challenges

It was the last thing Al Braccolino, 90, of Crown Point, told one of his daughters as paramedics loaded him into an ambulance Nov. 16. COVID-19 forced him into the final fight of his life.
Ten days later, the chair Al usually occupied at the Thanksgiving table would sit empty. The husband to his wife of 70 years, father of three and grandfather of six died on the holiday.
Al’s daughter, Sandra Noe, was herself suffering from COVID-19, which she contracted while caring for her sick parents, when the virus forced Al’s hospitalization.
Noe, 66, is no stranger to helping elderly shut-ins weather isolation. ....

Organizers gathered outside along Michigan Boulevard in Michigan City calling for Mayor Duane Parry s resignation following a racially charged comment left on a voicemail.

MICHIGAN CITY — A racially charged comment, apparently inadvertently recorded at the end of a phone message left by Mayor Duane Parry for a black local pastor, was blasted over a loudspeaker Tuesday outside City Hall amid calls for the mayor to resign.
“On the recording, the mayor thinks he has hung up the phone and falls into his comfort zone,” said Pastor James Lane of Pleasant Hill Missionary Baptist Church.
On the voicemail recording, Parry says, “They want a (expletive) audience, ya know. These black guys, they all want a (expletive) audience all the time.” ....
