The longtime goal of universal fire protection is moving rapidly with the Islands Fire Station now open and the county commissioners giving conceptual approval for a fire station and headquarters with other work at Miller Park.
County leaders have struggled for years to find an affordable way to deliver fire protection services as volunteer fire departments have declined. Miller Park, located on U.S. Highway 84 seven miles east of Hinesville is a central location and the county already owns property there. The park is near the intersection of Bill Carter Road and U.S. Highway 84.

LIBERTY COUNTY, Ga. (WTOC) - Two people are dead after a crash on East Oglethorpe Highway, near Bill Carter Road, on Wednesday evening.
Trooper Markus White with Georgia State Patrol confirms two vehicles were involved. Chief Brian Darby with Liberty County Fire Services says two people had to be extricated from the vehicles.
Four other people were taken to the hospital, one adult was flown while two other adults and a child were taken by ambulances.
Two people were killed Wednesday night in a two car accident in Liberty County.It happened on East Oglethorpe Highway near Bill Carter Road near Midway.Liberty County Fire services Chief Brian Darby said two people died in a Chevy Trailblazer.They were a woman and a preteen child. Rescuers also pulled out a six year old girl from her car seat. The six year old and several others in the other car were taken to the hospital. Portions of East Oglethorpe Highway was closed for more than an hour as the Georgia State Patrol investigated the cause of the crash.
