REDDITCH Labour has selected councillor Andy Fry as its new leader to take the party forward. Labour councillors chose the Lodge Park ward councillor after former leader Bill Hartnett lost his seat in the borough council elections last week. During the group s annual meeting, councillor Debbie Chance was elected as deputy leader, councillor Wanda King was elected as deputy chair and Jenny Wheeler as group whip. Andy Fry said: “The results last Thursday were a disappointment for the Labour Party in Redditch but with a 31 per cent share of the vote we have a role in scrutinising and putting forward alternative policies based on our manifesto and values, not only for our supporters, but for those who for whatever reason didn’t vote and may feel disenfranchised with politics at the moment. ....

A LABOUR candidate who lost his Redditch Borough Council seat has said his party did everything they could to get their message out. The Conservatives gained seven Labour seats in yesterday s election, including those of party leader Bill Hartnett, deputy leader Greg Chance. Former Redditch mayor Joe Baker, who lost his Greenlands ward seat, told the Advertiser the party is devastated by the result and have a hard fight back. “It was very disappointing and obviously the party is devastated by our losses. We believe we had really good candidates and we did everything we could to get our message out. ....
THE Redditch Labour group has launched its manifesto ahead of the borough and county council elections next month. The party has set out plans to put Redditch people first, secure the town s economy following the pandemic, and protect the Alex. Redditch Labour leader councillor Bill Hartnett said: Redditch people have talent and skills, local entrepreneurs and businesses, not for profit enterprises, local Co-Operatives who will all be encouraged and supported using the influence, power and wealth of the council. According to the manifesto, the party wants to support and encourage new startup businesses and regenerate the town centre and district centres. They want to change the council’s procurement policy so it is ‘Redditch First’ whenever possible. ....
COUNCIL tax is set to rise in Redditch after a budget was passed by Conservatives on the borough council. Occupiers of a Band B property can expect to pay an extra £3.89 per year (32p per month), with those from a Band D property paying an extra £5 per year (41p per month) for 2021/2022. As part of the budget, Redditch Conservatives want to bring forward investments into electric vehicle charging infrastructure, with £160,000 allocated to install electric charging points, as well as a £400,000 investment into parking improvements. The budget includes a £54,000 saving on the cost of agency staff and vehicle hire, and over £45,000 saved in the back office without affecting front-line service delivery. An allocation of £2m has also been made to support regeneration activities. ....
