New healthcare partnership studies climate impact on NJ residents
Hoping to increase awareness within the healthcare community, and eventually all of New Jersey, of how climate and the health of the environment impact the well-being of Garden State residents, multiple medical organizations around the state have united to form a new advocacy group, New Jersey Clinicians for Climate Action.
Together, the New Jersey chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics, the New Jersey Public Health Association, New Jersey State Nurses Association, Central Jersey Family Health Consortium, and Health Care Without Harm will not collaborate on the same kind of research as, for instance, the Rutgers Climate Institute, according to pediatrician Dr. Pauline (Polly) Thomas. ....

As water bills grow, NJ urged to consider fund to help residents
TRENTON – A lot of water, sewer and wastewater infrastructure in New Jersey is going to need to be replaced or upgraded in the decades ahead, and that’s likely to come with a hefty price tag.
Rutgers University associate professor Daniel Van Abs said drinking water systems in New Jersey need extensive attention, from replacing century-old underground equipment to looking at reservoirs and wells not designed for the increased precipitation expected due to climate change.
“All of these changes are going to place increased stresses on affordability,” Van Abs said. “We already have affordability issues in the state of New Jersey – people who are really struggling to pay their water and sewer bills and all of the other costs that their households face.” ....
