WEST PAWLET — The Vermont Supreme Court affirmed a lower court’s decision to issue a protective order against Daniel Banyai, who owns the Slate Ridge shooting facility in West Pawlet.
The protective order was granted to Banyai’s neighbor Mandy Hulett, who sought the anti-stalking order against Banyai in December 2020 on behalf of herself and her children after she said Banyai posted threatening messages about her family on Facebook, causing her family “great emotional distress,” and said, “they feared imminent physical harm.”
Banyai declined to comment on the case.
“I don’t respect your journalism,” he said. “I don’t understand, it’s like a slap in the face. I’m saying now and forever, I don’t want you guys to contact me. I have no comment for eternity.” ....

RUTLAND — A man has pleaded not guilty to felony charges after he crashed a car in Proctor last summer, killing an 18-year-old passenger from Pownal.
The man, Gage Capen, 21, is facing three counts of grossly negligent vehicle operation that resulted in the death of Kianna Peters as well as serious injury to two other passengers. Each count is punishable by up to 15 years in prison and/or a $15,000 fine.
State police said Capen had been driving a 2000 Saab 9-3 in the early hours of July 9, when he lost control of the car along a curve on West Street. The top-down convertible reportedly flipped and landed on its roof, trapping Peters underneath. She was pronounced dead on the scene. ....

Column | Wild West Pawlet: Shooting Range's Neighbors Plead for Government Help — and Get None

weekly political column.

We Vermonters have been telling ourselves an unhappy story that nevertheless delivers a twinge of satisfaction: If the rest of the nation had Vermont s per capita coronavirus death rate, only about 86,000 Americans would have died since the pandemic s onset.
Instead, the national toll stood at more than 400,000 deaths as of Tuesday. What accounts for the excess deaths? There are several explanations, including relative population densities, but the first thing many people will point to is the difference in basic governmental competence and leadership. We ve had Gov.

Gym Owner Will Comply with Governor’s Orders and Make A $1,000 Payment to the Vermont Foodbank
Vermont Business Magazine Attorney General TJ Donovan announced today that his office has reached a settlement with Club Fitness of Vermont, Inc. and its owner Sean Manovill, resolving claims that arose from Manovill’s decision to open for in-person business in May 2020 against the Governor’s orders. At the time that Club Fitness reopened, fitness centers were required by Governor Scott’s Executive Order to be closed to slow the spread of COVID-19.
The Attorney General’s Office filed a civil enforcement complaint in May 2020, alleging violations of Vermont’s emergency management statutes and Executive Order 01-20. Shortly thereafter, a court granted the Attorney General’s motion for a temporary restraining order, closing the gym. ....
