Discussion Of Solar Array Plan Continues

The Rockbridge County Planning Commission considered revisions to a plan to build a 40-acre solar array on a farm in Fairfield last Wednesday. This time around, the company, Dynamic Energy Solutions, hoped to address “visual concerns.”
The array would be just across from Fairfield Elementary School, between Interstate 81 and U.S. 11. The farm is owned by James G. Alexander Jr.
Pat Hastings, the director of project management for Dynamic Energy Solutions, showed sketches that included “a significant amount of landscaping” along Interstate 81, as well as along U.S. 11 and the northeast property line that borders a residential area. ....

Black Bear Damage Frustrates Peanut Farmers

Vibrant green peanut fields littered with stark, bare patches are a familiar sight for Southampton County farmer M.L. Everett Jr.
The damage to his fields is caused by black bears searching for areas with mature peanuts in loose, sandy soil. They pull up peanuts and âchow down on them like theyâre at a buffet,â he said.
âThey can do a lot of damage,â said Everett, a member of the Virginia Farm Bureau Federation board of directors.
He added that recent black bear damage hasnât been as bad as the 3 acres heâs lost to bears in the past, but he noticed a new trend. Theyâve been eating peanut seeds shortly after planting. ....

Rockbridge County cattle and small grains producer Russell L. Williams II was recognized Jan. 26 for five years of service on the Virginia Farm Bureau Federation board of directors.
VFBF President Wayne F. Pryor presented an award to Williams during a virtual Farm Bureau board meeting.
As the organization’s District 5 director, Williams represents Farm Bureau producer members in Amherst, Augusta, Bath, Highland, Nelson, Rockbridge and Rockingham counties. ....
