Two Rockingham solar projects meet mixed reception


BELLOWS FALLS — Two proposed solar projects got different receptions last week from the Rockingham Select Board.
Green Lantern Solar, which has proposed a facility at a town-owned gravel pit in Bartonsville, off Route 103, was back before the board, urging action before a state deadline for a higher electric net metering rate expires.
A second project, proposed for a town-owned field next to the historic Rockingham Meeting House by MHG Solar of Manchester Center, ran into opposition on several fronts — the facility would be located on prime agricultural land and it would be located in the historic district that surrounds the 1787 Meeting House. ....

To the editor: Hello friends and neighbors, my name is Elijah Zimmer. I am running for a one year seat on the Rockingham Select Board. I am a 29 year old Bellows Falls resident. I want to promote a positive, livable and affordable community for working class families and people of all ages.
During these challenging times I recognize that empathy and a spirit of community collaboration are very important. By working together and having a civil, respectful dialog about the issues facing our communities, we can build a brighter future for all. As a young person I will bring a fresh perspective and new energy to the board. Promoting local businesses and the creative economy, the arts, historic preservation and care of the environment are important priorities that I feel improve the quality of life, create jobs and build a stronger community. ....

Editor of the Reformer: Running for a local public office is simple. Especially in our current pandemic. Doing the job is hard. Or it should be if you are doing it right. Anyone can run if they live in the community where they wish to be elected. What they need to possess is deep experience with its residents, a sharp mind with vision for the future, and a gift for numbers and budgeting. Every town and village needs forward motion to renew housing stock, to attract commerce and to spread the tax burden evenly among all its hardworking citizens. BELLOWS FALLS — Gary Fox’s ears must have been burning Tuesday night, when the Bellows Falls Village Board of Trustees heaped praise on the work he was doing for the village and the town of Rockingham.
But that praise didn’t translate into immediate financial support to turn Fox’s three-quarters job as development director for Rockingham into a full-time position, with financial support from the village of Bellows Falls.
Fox, who was present at Tuesday night’s meeting, heard plenty of praise from the trustees who were at the meeting: James “Jiggs” McAuliffe, Village President Deborah Wright and Trustee Jeff Dunbar. Trustee Wade Masure attended via Zoom, and he also was supportive of Fox’s work. Missing was Trustee Stefan Golec. ....
