Prince William seeks funds to investigate cemetery connected first families of Va.

The Prince William County Board of Supervisors recently approved an application that will be used to explore a cemetery owned by one of the first families of Virginia.
The Department of Parks, Recreation, and Tourism recently got approval from the Board to apply for a Certified Local Government grant to conduct an archaeological dig at the Berea Cemetery, which resides on the grounds of the Forest Greens Golf Course in Triangle. ....

Battle Ground native serves aboard U.S. Navy warship

ATLANTIC OCEAN — A Battle Ground, Ind., native is serving aboard USS Carter Hall, a dock landing ship.
Petty Officer Third Class Matthew Sears is a 2018 William Henry Harrison High School gradate. Today, Sears serves a gunner’s mate responsible for maintaining the ships weapon systems, training people in weapon familiarization and up keep of the ships ordnance
Sears joined the Navy three years ago to give back and help people around the world.
According to Sears, the values required to succeed in the Navy are similar to those found in Battle Ground.
“Growing up in Battle Ground, a hard-working, blue-collar town, gave me a good work ethic and drive to make my family and community proud,” Sears said. ....

Carter, Charles (1732–1796) – Encyclopedia Virginia


Carter was born on October 15, 1732, most likely in Christ Church Parish in Middlesex County, where he was christened on November 15, 1732. The son of Charles Carter, a wealthy planter and later a member of the House of Burgesses, and his first wife, Mary Walker Carter, and also a grandson of the land baron Robert “King” Carter, he was closely related to many of the colony’s leading families. Among his influential uncles were John Carter, secretary of the colony and a member of the governor’s Council, and Landon Carter, a noted planter, writer, and member of the House of Burgesses. On November 22, 1753, Carter married Elizabeth Chiswell, daughter of the land speculator and mine operator John Chiswell, of Hanover County. They had five sons and two daughters. ....
