Some of the most successful and famous silver and gold miners in the United States in the late 19th century were Irish or Irish Americans. Thus, it is not surprising that there were a large number of them in Korea in the early 20th century working for the American-owned gold mining companies. One of these early Irish-American miners was Martin McMahon.
McMahon was born in Limerick, Ireland, on Feb. 20, 1870, and his family immigrated to the United States in 1881 and settled in Colorado ― a state associated with mining. Naturally, at some point, McMahon became a miner and then fell in love with an Irish Canadian girl (five years his junior) named Mary Bel ― who apparently liked to be called Molly. ....

Lee Sueng-euk: The Secret Royal Inspector

By Robert Neff
Traveling clothes in the late 19th century / Robert Neff CollectionIn early 1897, eight young men quietly left Seoul on a secret mission for the king. These men were Amhaeng-eosa (Secret Royal Inspectors) and had been dispatched to different provinces to look after the condition of the people and to administer justice to immoral classes. As their name implies, they traveled in secret (sometimes in disguise) until they arrived at their target destination and, after examining the conditions of the populace, revealed themselves to the local government.
Often these agents did not survive their missions ― wild animals and bandits preyed upon them on the lonelier stretches of highways, and sometimes corrupt officials (learning of the agent s identity) hired assassins to cut them down in dark places or poison their food before they could arrive. ....

Daeboreum of 1887: Saving the moon

By Robert Neff
On the evening of Feb. 8, 1887, Seoul was awash with excitement. It was Daeboreum, the first full moon of the lunar year, and the citizens of Joseon s largest city and capital were busy with their holiday preparations.
This year s was not a normal Daeboreum, for it was also the night of a partial lunar eclipse. According to Homer Hulbert ― one of the earliest American English teachers ― to many superstitious people, the eclipse was one of the most startling things to occur, as they believed it was a great heavenly dog trying to devour the moon.
Much of the population, wishing to know what the new year had in store for them, sought spiritual and supernatural advice from shamans (known as mudang ) and fortunetellers. Horace N. Allen, an American missionary doctor, described (in his usual untactful manner) how some of these fortunetellers obtained their knowledge: ....
