Public health experts are raising alarm over Brazil this week, as the pandemic-hit nation has reached several grim coronavirus milestones, including a record number of deaths and the possible spread of multiple more-contagious variants.
Brazilian authorities on Tuesday reported nearly 4,200 covid-19 deaths the country’s highest daily death toll since the pandemic began. The raging outbreak has been fueled by the virulent P.1 variant, and now scientists there say they have identified Brazil’s first case involving a similar, more transmissible variant discovered in South Africa. ....

The first shipments of COVID-19 vaccine arrived in South Africa on Monday amidst concerns that new coronavirus variants and “vaccine nationalism” are hindering efforts to control the pandemic.
One million doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine, developed in partnership with the University of Oxford and manufactured at the Serum Institute of India, were expected to be delivered. To date, South Africa has been the hardest hit nation on the African continent, with 1,453,761 cases and 44,164 deaths, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University.
Cyril Ramaphosa, the president of South Africa, welcomed the news of the vaccine shipment as a “major milestone.” ....

Research on Spanish patients found COVID-19 may cause symptoms in the mouth and tongue.
About one in four patients in the study experienced swelling, sores, bumps, or discolored patches.

Hungary has become the first country in the European Union to give preliminary approval to the Russian coronavirus vaccine, Sputnik V.
On Thursday, Prime Minister Viktor Orban s chief of staff confirmed both the Russian jab and the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine had been given the green light by the health authorities.
Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto is travelling to Moscow for further talks, where he is expected to discuss a shipment and distribution deal.
Early results from trials of the Sputnik vaccine have shown promising results. ....

A lightly regulated free market and the profit motive, we’re told, inevitably leads to the exploitation of workers and consumers. Through Hollywood’s lens, government is far more virtuous and effective than the private sector, and regulations are a force for good.
