SAN JUAN COUNTY, Wash. A historic yacht, which saw service in World War II and was later owned by John Wayne, has sunk in Washington s San Juan Islands.
On April 17, the 76-foot
Norwester sustained heavy damage to hull when it struck submerged rocks near Prevost Harbor on Stuart Island, Coast Guard officials said. The eight people on board were rescued.
It would later be determined that there was in a fact a one-foot-by-four-foot hole in the hull, said Petty Officer Michael Clark of the U.S. Coast Guard. Water pumps aboard the vessel were unable to keep up with the flooding. ....

KIRKLAND, Wash. Owners of John Wayne’s former yacht are asking for help after the vessel hit unmarked rocks in the San Juans last Saturday.
Rick Rutherford is an owner of the vessel and has started a GoFundMe page.
On it, he points to the Norwester’s history of famous guests including Bette Davis and Orson Wells, and its duty as WWII patrol boat.
Rutherford says prospects of saving the yacht are becoming more remote the longer it is stranded.
He is asking financial help for its recovery. ....

Ventura County officials moved forward with COVID-19 vaccinations this week, opening up registration to all who fall into Phase 1a, which includes hospital staff, medical first responders, long-term care staff and residents, all other health care providers, and more.
People who are in those categories can register to receive the COVID-19 vaccine on www.venturacountyrecovers.org. The complete list of who can receive the vaccine under Phase 1a is on the website as well.
At the county’s weekly COVID-19 press conference Jan. 13, Ventura County Health Care Agency Chief Deputy Director Barry Zimmerman said more than15,500 people had been vaccinated as of that day. “We are in our first phase of the rollout at this point in time,” he said. “So far, we started Monday (Jan. 11) with nearly 500, yesterday (Jan. 12) over 600 individuals and today (Jan. 13) will be just under 1,000 i ....

Ventura County seeing surge in COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations as efforts to distribute vaccine ramps up

Hospitals in Ventura County are having to add more storage space for bodies as coronavirus deaths and cases climb across the region.
County public health officials are now dealing with the surge in cases and hospitalizations following the holidays that they had warned about, including a strain on available hospital beds.
The sustained surge that we re experiencing has put tremendous pressure on our hospitals. We are full. When I walked into my shift yesterday, more than half of our emergency department beds were occupied by patients who needed a hospital bed but were waiting for space to open up, said Dr. Rick Rutherford with the Ventura County Medical Center. ....
