Advertisement A Victorian street running though Bradford University campus has been uncovered by first-year archaeology students who had time on their hands after their ordinary fieldwork trip was cancelled due to coronavirus. The cobbled street dates from around 1880 and would have been covered over when Victorian terraced houses were demolished in the 1960s to make way for the construction of the university in its current form. Prior to the West Yorkshire institution being built the area around it would have been lined with dozens of historic terraces, creating a warren of back alleys and yards. The students who found the street would normally conduct fieldwork on the island of Orkney, off the coast of Scotland, but digging took place closer to home due to the coronavirus pandemic. ....
Rachel Reeves MP A WEST YORKSHIRE MP is set to speak at the University of Bradford today, invoking the words of Harold Wilson s famous white heat of technology speech. Rachel Reeves (Lab, Leeds West), Shadow Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster and Shadow Minister for the Cabinet Office, will be speaking at the Harold Wilson Lecture from 6pm to 7.15pm, delivering a talk entitled, Revisiting White Heat in an Age of Insecurity . Before entering politics, the MP worked as an economist for the Bank of England and for HBOS and is the author of two books. Rachel Reeves said: “I am excited to be delivering the Harold Wilson Memorial Lecture on what would have been his 105th birthday. Wilson left Britain a more modern, more free and more equal country. As a West Yorkshire MP, I have always looked to him for inspiration. ....
WORK has begun on installing new cladding to the Richmond and Horton buildings at the University of Bradford. It follows a successful application for £3.5m in funding from the Government’s Salix Finance scheme, which provides funding to improve energy efficiency, reduce carbon emissions and lower energy bills. In addition to new cladding, some 480 new double-glazed windows will also be installed. The works are set to continue until October. Some entrances and exits to the affected buildings may be closed temporarily during the works, with visitors re-routed. There may be some minor construction nuisance associated with the project. Andrew Hague Building Manager from Property Services, who submitted the successful bid and is responsible for project delivery, said: “The total area of the new external cladding across both buildings is 4,000 square metres, including nearly 500 new windows, and will hugely improve the thermal comfort levels for building u ....
The mural at the University of Bradford A 1960s MURAL at the University of Bradford will be retained after amended plans to clad a building were approved. The work - at the entrance to the University s Richmond Building, was designed by artist Joseph Mayo in 1964, and is thought to be his last surviving mural in the UK. The University recently submitted an application to add cladding to large areas of its buildings to help conserve energy. This included areas of the Richmond Building, and the original plans would have seen the Mayo mural covered up. These proposals attracted a huge amount of objections, including from the artist s son and the 20th Century Society. ....
