Race of the century: When The Flying Dutchman of Middleham went up against Voltigeur of Richmond

IT was the race of the century, the showdown of all time. It was known in horseracing circles as “the Great Match”, and it was so great that it drew the largest crowd at York’s Knavesmire – up to 150,000 people – since murderer Eugene Aram, guilty of killing his co-conspirator in the great Knaresborough shoe swindle, had been publicly executed there 91 years earlier.
It was held on May 31, 1851, and it pitted The Flying Dutchman of Middleham against Voltigeur of Richmond, the two greatest racehorses of the day, and although Voltigeur lost, he still has a grand gate in a triumphal arch in his honour to this day. ....

Avenue of oak trees planted by Richmond residents representing 11 decades

RESIDENTS representing 11 decades have gathered at a community woodland to mark the 950th anniversary of a castle built by one of William the Conqueror’s closest allies.
The event saw Richmond residents born in 1921, 2021 and every decade in between plant an avenue of oaks at Rufus Woods, named after Aan Rufus, Lord of Richemont in Upper Normandy, who commissioned Richmond Castle in 1071.
The woodland is taking shape on a site a hectare site south of the old racecourse which has been offered at a peppercorn rent by landowners including the Earl of Ronaldshay.
However, like many of the anniversary plans, an ambition to involve the community in the planting of 950 native trees had to be altered because of Covid restrictions. ....

Five years ago a County Durham man with cystic fibrosis conquered Everest

The Northern Echo’s report on the man who climbed Everest
Nick Talbot, originally of Hamsterley, in Teesdale, successfully reached the summit on his third attempt of the world’s highest mountain despite battling the life-shortening genetic condition.
The then 40-year-old’s last attempt in 2015 was cut short by the earthquake that tragically devastated Base Camp, and his first attempt in 2014 was thwarted by an avalanche.
Mr Talbot, who then lived in London, had already raised £79,000 for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust and was currently resting back at camp four before making his return to base camp.
Cystic fibrosis is a life-shortening genetic condition, which causes the internal organs, especially the lungs and digestive system, to become clogged with thick sticky mucus, resulting in chronic infections and inflammation of the lungs. ....
