Springfield adds COVID testing site in Indian Orchard

SPRINGFIELD The city Feb. 17 will open a new weekly COVID-19 testing site at the John F. Kennedy Middle School in Indian Orchard.
Testing will be offered Wednesdays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the school at 1385 Berkshire Ave., officials said Friday.
While residents are encouraged to register online in advance to cut down on wait times, walk-ins will also be accepted, officials said. The site is primarily intended for residents of surrounding neighborhoods.
The Indian Orchard site was announced by Mayor Domenic J. Sarno, Health and Human Services Commissioner Helen Caulton-Harris, and American Medical Response. The city and AMR personnel will establish the testing site. ....

SPRINGFIELD The city has applied for a $300,000 state MassTrails grant to design the second segment of the long-planned walking and bicycle trail along the abandoned Highland Division Railroad.
State Reps. Angelo Puppolo and Bud Williams, D-Springfield, sent a joint letter to the state Department of Conservation and Recreation this week urging approval of the grant. ....

SPRINGFIELD The city needs more.
That was the message this week as city councilors met with local department heads and with aides to federal elected officials to plead for more money, more testing and more vaccines to confront the coronavirus pandemic.
Councilor Jesse Lederman, chairman of the COVID-19 Response Committee, said Wednesday that his meetings will continue weekly “as a platform to respond to the ongoing challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, and plan for a just recovery that serves all of our neighborhoods.” ....
