Aussie HR tech startup Pyn has raised $10.4 million in funding, led by ultra high-profile Silicon Valley VC firm Andreessen Horowitz, which is making its first investment in Australia.
Atlassian co-founder and co-chief Scott Farquhar also participated in the raise, along with BambooHR co-founder Ryan Sanders.
Pyn was founded back in 2019 by two bonafide veterans of the Aussie startup scene — Jon Williams, one of the co-founders of Culture Amp, and Joris Luijke, former vice president at Atlassian and Squarespace.
In the same way platforms like Facebook make recommendations based on what they know about a user’s age, demographic and life stage, Pyn allows businesses to use what they know about employees to communicate more effectively.

Australian startup Pyn raises $8M seed to bring targeted communication in-house
Most marketers today know how to send targeted communications to customers, and there are many tools to help, but when it comes to sending personalized in-house messages, there aren’t nearly as many options. Pyn, an early-stage startup based in Australia, wants to change that, and today it announced an $8 million seed round.
Andreessen Horowitz led the investment with help from Accel and Ryan Sanders (the co-founder of BambooHR) and Scott Farquhar (co-founder and co-CEO at Atlassian).
That last one isn’t a coincidence, as Pyn co-founder and CEO Joris Luijke used to run HR at the company and later at Squarespace and other companies, and he saw a common problem trying to provide more targeted messages when communicating internally.

Barely two years after he could walk, Connor Goodman was learning how to perfect takedowns and escapes, while the most advanced things many kids his age were doing was singing along with Dora the Explorer songs and running through water sprinklers.
But even then, as a mere toddler, Goodman knew he wanted to be a wrestler.
He got his first introduction to the sport with his dad, Rob, as a young member of the Team Cabarrus wrestling program before transitioning to the well-known Darkhorse Wrestling Club when he was in middle school.
âMy dad helped me out with all the basics,â Goodman said of Rob, who wrestled at East Rowan High. âHeâd help me get good workouts in and building me up, and then he sent me to club practices so I would get better. He was one of my coaches (with Team Cabarrus).â

State School Board Seeks to Support Teachers Post-COVID, Help Students With Summer Remediation

The West Virginia Board of Education is exploring ways to improve working conditions for teachers who are emerging from the unprecedented drain of teaching during a pandemic -- and looking ahead at the way forward for their students who will need remediation.
The board hopes to address issues like teacher shortages and burnout as classes return this fall and as educators assess the best plan to ensure that everyone in the classroom is supported.
Board members last week heard plans from two counties in their monthly meeting on how they hope to assist students in catching up. They also received a presentation from the nonpartisan Learning Policy Institute. Their study, which began in July 2019 and ended in Feb. 2020, considered teacher shortages as a major issue in West Virginia -- but a critical issue in southern counties.

In the first bit of Wolves' “offseason” news, Woj reports a change in Chris Finch’s coaching staff. Albeit unsurprising given the circumstances, both David Vanterpool and Bryan Gates will not return next season. This shouldn’t come as a shock given Finch was hired on the fly in a rare midseason move that plucked him off the Raptors staff to replace Ryan Saunders. He ran with the group he was given.
