The last time the Chicago Blackhawks started a season with three-straight regulation losses was in 1997-98. That move left the Hawks with unproven goalies Colin Delia or Malcolm Subban as their starter. Considering how porous the Hawks defense has been the past two seasons that was not going to be a recipe for success. Then the really bad news started to roll in. First 2 nd line center Kirby Dach suffered a wrist injury in the World Juniors tournament while captaining Team Canada. Dach’s injury was severe enough it required surgery and will sideline him for 4 to 6 months, which means he will be out most if not all of this season. Just a couple days after that the news came out the Blackhawks Captain Jonathan Toews would be out indefinitely with a mysterious illness that has left him lethargic and without much energy. There is currently no timetable for Toews’ return. Because of this the Blackhawks will now turn to Dylan Strome to center their top line this season.

On the surface, Highmore, Carpenter and Kampf are an odd combination. None was drafted. Highmore, 24, spent seven years in Canadian juniors and the American Hockey League. Carpenter, who will be 30 on Jan. 18, is an NHL journeyman, having played for the Sharks and Golden Knights before the Hawks. Kampf, who will turn 26 on Tuesday, was an overage Czech import in 2017 who is entering his fourth season with the Hawks. But the three have become practically inseparable linemates and friends, giving the Hawks a stable fourth line even while the top three are shuffled regularly.

Jonathan Toews has been ruled out with an unknown illness and has no timetable to return, the team announced Tuesday, leaving the Hawks without their captain and No. 1 center for the time being. “This offseason, I’ve been experiencing symptoms that have left me feeling drained and lethargic,” Toews said in a statement. “I am working with doctors so I can better understand my condition. “Until I can get my health back to a place where I feel I can perform at an elite level and help my team, I will not be joining the Blackhawks for training camp. I do not have a timetable for when I will rejoin the team. I am extremely disappointed, but it wouldn’t be fair to myself or my teammates to attempt to play in my current condition.”
