Three injured in crash on SH7 north of Reefton

A car has collided with a tree between Reefton and Springs Junction, reducing SH7 to a single lane. (File photo)
A car has crashed into a tree just north of Reefton, reducing State Highway 7 to a single lane.
Police were notified of the crash at 8:10am, involving a single car which collided with a tree about 25km out of Reefton. Three people were injured in the crash.
The crash occurred on Rahu Saddle, between Reefton and Springs Junction.
St John spokesman Gerard Campbell said one patient with serious injuries had been taken to Greymouth Hospital by helicopter. One person with a minor injury was taken by ambulance to Greymouth Hospital.

The MetService is forecasting rain for much of Aotearoa with risk of thunderstorms overnight from Southern Westland up to Waikato.
More heavy rain is forecast for Buller and other areas hit hard by the weekend deluge and flooding.
MetService has issued a heavy rain warning for Buller and the ranges of Westland for an 11-hour period, starting from about 6pm on Wednesday till 5am on Thursday.
Much of the rest of Aotearoa will also see rain late Wednesday or early Thursday with thunderstorm risk from Southern Westland all the way up to Waikato.
MetService meteorologist Tui McInnes said the region could expect showers on Wednesday morning, turning to rain in the evening when the warning will “kick-in”.

Work Begins To Reconnect South Island Communities As Flood Waters Recede

Waka Kotahi contractors are beginning the hard work of
re-connecting South Island communities cut off by this
weekend’s massive weather event as flood waters begin to
recede.

Manager Tresca Forrester says crews have been out since
first light assessing road damage, inspecting bridges and
clearing debris from blocked and flooded
highways.
Access to some cut-off communities such as
Westport and through to Golden Bay has been re-established,
with the SH67 Buller Bridge, SH60 from Collingwood to Riwaka
and SH6 from Hira to Rai Valley all re-opened (Rai Valley to
Renwick remains closed).

Trade Me had one rental listed in the entire Buller district on Saturday.
Cleine said with “next to no available rentals” already, the concerns now were about finding somewhere for displaced families to live either medium or long-term while houses were repaired or rebuilt.
O’Connor said this was the biggest flood event he had seen in Westport over his lifetime, saying it was a one in 100 year event.
