Reading Abbey: Ruined Are A Reminder of Medieval Religious Strife

Reading Abbey Then and Now
Although Reading Abbey is abandoned today, it would have been a marvelous site to see in its heyday. Had it survived, Reading Abbey would have been one of the most perfect examples of Norman architecture in England. The monastery was built between the two rivers Kennet and the Thames. It would have had an elaborate cloister which had monsters carved into the capitals, known as the “beak heads.” The size of the structure was grand and the abbey would have been painted in vibrant reds, yellows and blues. In 2018, Reading Museum created a digital model of what they believed the Reading Abbey may have looked like before dissolution by King Henry VIII . ....

Creepy Things You'd Find In Ancient Egypt

Creepy Things You d Find In Ancient Egypt
By Sarah Crocker/Jan. 22, 2021 1:51 pm EDT
In the eyes of quite a few people, ancient Egypt could be a bit creepy. As per History, most scholars agree that ancient Egypt began when the fractured lands around the Nile River were united around 3100 B.C.E. and ran, with a couple of significant interruptions, until a Macedonian named Alexander the Great strolled into town with conquering on his mind in 332 B.C.E. However you put it, that s a lot of time for a civilization to develop a set of increasingly complicated beliefs, some of which may put modern folk in an uneasy state. ....

Businesses flocked to West Reading in 2020, and the future is bright

Even as COVID strained economic conditions across the country, West Reading s business community grew exponentially in 2020.
With the launch of Snazzy Beauty Supply on the 400 block of Penn Avenue last week, the borough has welcomed 19 new retailers during the pandemic compared to eight closures — a net gain of 11 businesses — according to West Reading Main Street manager Mark Ratcliffe.
I am pleasantly surprised, for sure, said Ratcliffe. Nobody knew when this pandemic came up what was going to happen.

And not only does Ratcliffe expect the momentum to carry over into 2021, but there is now talk of redevelopment opportunities that could further transform West Reading over the course of the next decade. ....

The story of Micheldever gives more material for local historians

ALTHOUGH many resist the idea that hard copy print products – call them books! - are on the way out, there are obvious advantages with digital files.
Whereas, for example, sourcing Anglo-Saxon charters once required a dusty encounter in an academic library, much can now be achieved online from the ‘electronic Sawyer’, a version of Peter Sawyer’s annotated list and bibliography, hosted at the Centre for Computing in the Humanities at King’s College, London.
The charters themselves, however, are published in a mammoth 30-volume operation by Oxford University Press. Sean Miller’s Charters of the New Minster (later Hyde Abbey) has been in print since 2001 and covers 34 pre-Conquest documents, including the will of Alfred the Great. ....

From National Trust parks to historic ruins: Reading and Bracknell's top attractions

Lower Basildon, Reading RG8 9NR
Rated 4.5/5 stars on TripAdvisor, the National Trust park is a country house surrounded by glorious parkland.
Although it is currently open,
One recent review said: This will definitely be a place we regularly visit as a family.
The first climb up from the car park is quite steep (heed pram pushers!) but the house is beautiful - from the outside of course.
The walks around the grounds are very clearly signposted and perfect for young children. Lots to see and logs and stumps to balance along. The kiosk near the car park serves a decent fare and we strongly recommend the flapjack! ....
